Elve is an upper atmosphere phenomenon powered by thunderstorms.

Elve (short for Emission of Light and Very low frequency perturbations due to Electromagnetic pulse sources) can be seen as a flat ring glowing in Earth's upper atmosphere. They appear for just milliseconds and can grow to be fairly large — up to 200 miles (320 kilometers) wide.
